Rotors
In order to change keys in a trombone, the use of a sophisticated air column switching mechanism is engaged. Many of these mechanisms provide a torturous path for the air with the resultant impedance offered to the player who now has a "hard to blow" instrument. Getzen on their Edwards Concept trombones use the genuine patented THAYER AXIAL FLOW VALVE.
Ed Thayer designed this valve to avoid the deficiencies of the standard rotary valve, in which angles over 90 degrees and sharp curves in the air column must to be negotiated.
The Thayer Valve does not deflect the passage of air by more than 25 degrees. The passage of the sound wave through the Thayer Valve passes through very similar dimensioned tubing so as to not provide any interruption to the air flow.
The axial flow valve used on Edwards trombones are made in house under the umbrella of the strictest of quality control, providing the end user of the instrument with the assurance of perfection for their personal instrument.
The end result is a valve with superior sound and performance.
