The half double french horn or compensating horn is a specially designed and built french horn to couple all the characteristics of it's big brother (the full double french horn) with the products of economy due to the method of manufacture.

Half double french horns are much lighter and are ideally suited for students or older people having a problem with the weight of the full double french horns. It is built using one full set of tubing for one side and with the use of the thumb lever and only half the tubing on the other side, providing all the tuning necessary for the instrument.

As with the full double french horn, the bell is rose brass providing a richer tone than the average student french horn. This like other french horns is availabile for rent or rental over a long or short term, and probably less expensive than others for either rental or purchase.
